The History of Innisbrook
Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club opened in 1970 after being conceived by Toledo, Ohio natives (and avid golfers), James Curtin and Gene Pease. The twosome had become discouraged during their search to play quality golf courses without long waiting lines. Believing there were likely thousands of other golfers with similar frustrations, they set about to create an entirely new golf experience.
Their plan consisted of creating an outstanding golf course complex that combined luxury accommodations, an array of amenities and fine dining options. After reviewing a number of locations, the pair purchased a parcel of land in 1968 in the Tampa/Clearwater area; a setting that was becoming increasingly renowned for its climate and accessibility via Tampa International Airport and major roadways.
Shortly thereafter, Harvey Jones, also from Toledo, was selected as developer of the resort. E. Lawrence Packard, then President of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, was commissioned to design the golf course.
The Island golf course, clubhouse and three condominium buildings, aptly named lodges, opened in December 1970. One year later, the Sandpiper golf course and clubhouse (known today as the North and South courses), and five additional lodges opened. Then, just one year later, the Copperhead golf course opened for play. By 1985, Innisbrook boasted 28 lodges and enough meeting and event space to be ranked as one of America’s premier resort meeting destinations; a distinction it retains to this day.
Today, guests of Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club enjoy 72 holes of golf on four championship courses; more than 620 guest suites; four specialty restaurants; 65,000 square-feet of meeting space; six swimming pools (including the Loch Ness Monster Pool); 60 acres of lakes; fitness facilities and a Tennis Center with 11 courts.
In July 2007, Innisbrook was purchased by Salamander Hospitality, a company owned and operated by successful entrepreneur, philanthropist and C.A.R.E. Ambassador, Sheila C. Johnson. The Resort was re-branded as Innisbrook, a Salamander Golf and Spa Resort. Salamander Hospitality owns, manages and develops hotels, resorts and inns that reflect the authenticity and character of their surrounding environment to become community landmarks. Based in Middleburg, Virginia, the company is built upon a uniquely personalized approach to the hospitality business.
